What I wish I knew before starting my course: Real talk for new students

When you start studying—especially as an adult—it can feel exciting, overwhelming, and a little bit scary all at once. Whether you’re returning to learning after years in the workforce or stepping into a new field altogether, you’re not alone.

We asked some of our current students and trainers to share what they wish they knew before they started their course at MECTA. Here’s what came up again and again.

1. You don’t have to be perfect—just present

It’s easy to feel like you have to know everything from day one, but you’re here to learn. It’s OK to ask questions. It’s OK to need help. Showing up, being curious, and staying open is more important than getting everything “right” first go.

“I wish I knew that everyone else felt nervous too. Asking questions helped me feel part of something.”

2. Your life experience matters

Adult learners often forget that the skills they’ve gained in parenting, working, or volunteering are incredibly valuable. Whether it’s communication, problem-solving, or patience—you bring a lot to the table already.

“At first I felt behind, but then I realised I’ve been learning informally my whole life.”

At MECTA, we encourage students to recognise the strengths they already hold. Learning doesn’t begin on the first day of your course—it began long before you enrolled. We’re just here to help you build on that foundation with new tools and formal qualifications.

3. It’s normal to have a wobble

There’ll be weeks when everything flows—and others when it just doesn’t. That’s normal. Life happens. The important thing is to reach out early. At MECTA, your trainers are here to support you, not just assess you.

“I thought I had to hide when I was struggling. But one message to my trainer made a world of difference.

If you ever feel stuck or unsure, our support booking system via Calendly makes it easy to schedule time with a trainer when it suits you. No need to wait or wonder—you can book a chat, a check-in, or even just a moment to refocus with someone who understands.

4. Creating a study rhythm helps

Whether it’s setting aside a regular time each week to study, or using a planner or checklist—routine can be your best friend. Start small, and build it into your week like you would exercise or grocery shopping.

“Having my study time set aside made it feel more real and less like something I had to ‘find time for.’”

Even a simple weekly routine—reviewing your notes on a Sunday, planning your study blocks ahead, or checking in with your trainer—can help your progress feel more steady and manageable.

5. You grow in more ways than you expect

Many students say they came to study to get a qualification… and left with more confidence, purpose, and even new friendships. It’s more than a course—it’s a journey.

“Studying made me realise I’m capable of more than I thought.”

At MECTA, many of our trainers have walked a similar path—they’ve juggled family, work, and study, and they get it. They’re not just here to tick boxes; they’re here to guide, encourage and uplift you because they’ve been where you are. It’s not just professional support—it’s personal understanding.

If you’re just starting out, know this:

You’re not expected to have it all figured out. You’re supported, you’re capable, and you belong here. Make use of the tools we offer—like booking time with your trainer, connecting with your cohort, and trusting the process.

This journey isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress—and we’re here with you every step of the way. So what have you got to lose? Get started now!
